Athletico Madrid Win at El Madrigal

Athletico Madrid won at Villareal to take a step forward towards finishing third in the La Liga this season. Fernando Torres came on as a substitute and scored the lone goal of the game.

Athletico Madrid won a well- deserved win at El Madrigal which saw Fernando Torres score a wonderful goal. Athletico Madrid dominated possession and chances but they squandered opportunities until a 73rd minute winner from Spanish striker Fernando Torres who came on as a second half substitute.

Antoinne Griezmann was a constant threat to Villareal defense with his pace and he also saw his hot come off the post late in the first half.

Victor Ruiz had a wonderful header in the first half but it was saved exceptionally well by Athetico goalkeeper Oblak. In the same time Griezmann had penalty appeal waved off by the Referee. Diego Godin was as solid as rock in defense as he slid in for challenges plenty of times and clear off the line late in the first period.


Diego Simeone sent in Torres and Saul in for Mandzukic and Arda Turan midway through the second half. The deadlock broke in the 73rd minute when Ivory Coast defender Bailly slipped in his own defeding area and Torres took advantage and took it past Asenjo and scored with ease. The win for Athetico sent them 6 points clear of sevilla in third place.
